Keep bugs out.
Make roaches take the bait.

Your best first move is not stronger poison. Install a self-closing insect screen, seal the gap under the door, then use enclosed bait stations indoors. That combination keeps incoming insects out and deals with any cockroaches already hiding inside.

Important distinction: one large roach near a door may be an outdoor invader. Repeated small roaches, babies, daytime sightings, egg cases or pepper-like droppings point to an indoor breeding problem and need faster escalation.

Fit a magnetic insect screen that parts as someone walks through and seals itself. Add a door sweep for the gap when the solid door is shut.

Use bait, not a room-wide spray

Place enclosed roach bait stations beside walls, under sinks and behind appliances, out of reach of children and pets. Let the slow-acting bait work.

Remove habitat; spot-treat by label

Move leaves, cardboard, pet food, bins and standing water away from doors. If using a labelled indoor/outdoor product, treat only listed sites—never blanket-spray.

Treatment checklist

Work through this in sequence. Spraying first can scatter cockroaches and contaminate bait placements.

Your 14-day follow-up

Baits need time. A brief log stops one upsetting sighting from making the whole plan feel ineffective.

TonightPhotograph or trap the insect if possible. Wipe crumbs, dry sink, empty rubbish. Place monitoring traps.
Day 1Install screen/sweep. Put bait stations tight to walls near activity. Do not spray near bait.
Days 2–3Check traps and note locations. Remove dead insects. Do not move bait too quickly.
Day 7Compare trap counts. Refresh only as the bait label directs. Seal the highest-activity entry gaps.
Day 14If sightings clearly dropped, keep monitoring. If unchanged, change bait placement or call a professional.

Safety & common mistakes

The label on the exact Barbados product controls where and how it may be used. Never improvise pesticide mixtures.

Do not spray over or beside bait

Repellent aerosol can make cockroaches avoid the bait. Keep bait placements clean, dry and free from sprays or strong cleaners.

Skip foggers and “bug bombs”

They can expose people and pets, miss the hiding cracks, and disperse cockroaches deeper into the building. UC IPM specifically recommends avoiding them.

Children, pets, asthma or pregnancy

Prefer tamper-resistant enclosed stations and physical exclusion. Put every pesticide where it cannot be touched, licked or inhaled. If anyone is sensitive, ask the product manufacturer or a licensed professional before indoor use.

Dusts are not harmless

Boric acid or diatomaceous earth should be a barely visible, dry crack-and-void treatment only where the label permits—not piles on open floors or counters. Avoid breathing any dust.

Call a professional now if:
  • you see many small roaches or babies;
  • roaches appear in daytime;
  • you find egg cases or many pepper-like droppings;
  • activity is in several rooms;
  • there is no clear improvement after 14 days of correct baiting and sanitation; or
  • the home has vulnerable occupants and treatment cannot be isolated safely.
